Behind the Scenes: Personalized Comfort Starts Here

One of our favorite things about working directly with designers is helping tailor every last detail to your client’s preferences. Even comfort is personal – and when you’re designing a custom piece, how it feels is just as important as how it looks.

Because we own and operate our own factory in Los Angeles, we’re able to offer customization that goes far beyond fabric selection. Whether your client loves the firm support of a structured bench seat or prefers to melt into a soft, cozy sectional, we’re here to help you dial it in.

Comfort Is a Design Decision
When specifying custom upholstery, two key elements determine the final feel: construction style and cushion fill.

Let’s start with construction. This comes down to whether you want a tight or loose seat or back.
A tight construction means the seat or back is fully upholstered with no removable cushions. It creates a crisp, architectural look and a firmer sit — perfect for modern or formal spaces.
The alternative features loose cushions that rest atop the frame, offering a more relaxed, lounge-friendly experience.

From there, the comfort story continues with the cushion fill — what goes inside — which is where we really personalize how soft or firm the seat is.

The Fill Spectrum: From Extra Firm to Ultra Plush
We offer a range of cushion fill options, including foam, natural or man-made down, feathers, or a custom blend. These choices don’t just change the way a sofa feels; they also influence the piece’s appearance, longevity, and maintenance requirements.

Some key considerations to guide your client conversation:

  • Usage: Will this piece see daily, high-traffic use, or is it more for occasional seating? Everyday family pieces often benefit from medium or firm cushions, which retain their shape longer.
  • Posture Preferences: Does your client prefer to perch upright or sink in deeply? Firmer cushions encourage more structured support, while softer options invite that “sink-in” lounge feel.
  • User Demographics: Consider the ages and mobility of the primary users. Older clients, for instance, may prefer firmer cushions for easier sitting and standing, while younger families might love the softness of a feather or down blend.
  • Aesthetic Goals: Firmer cushions tend to hold a crisp, tailored profile, while looser fills offer a more relaxed, inviting look.

Your Partner in Custom Comfort
These decisions can feel technical, but our Custom Design Concierge™ team is here to support you through this part of the process. We’ll walk you through the full range of options, explain how each one impacts sit and silhouette, and help you build a piece that’s perfectly calibrated to your client’s lifestyle.

Every Nathan Anthony piece is handcrafted in our Los Angeles studio by artisans who have spent decades mastering their craft. That’s how we ensure that when your client sits down for the first time — whether on a crisp, structured bench seat or a cloud-like sectional — it feels exactly as you both envisioned.

Because comfort isn’t one-size-fits-all. And with custom upholstery, it never has to be.

Inside the Upholstery Frame: Why Craft Matters

At first glance, you may not realize the hours of effort that go into crafting a Nathan Anthony custom upholstery order. If we’re doing our job right, that’s exactly how it should be. The pitch perfect tension in the Alder wood frame and Pirelli webbing, the made-to-order mix of foam and comfort filling, the precise fabric matching at the seams, and straight-as-a-pin topstitching, are best appreciated when you and your client take a seat and sigh in comfort.

The art of framing the chassis

Behind every curve and silhouette is a team of artisans who’ve been practicing their craft for decades. They know how to make a seam land just right. They know how to sculpt a frame so it hugs the body, or pull fabric so precisely that the line vanishes into the form. These aren’t things you can learn quickly – they’re the result of time, discipline, and pride in the work.

Take the sweeping arc of our Relax sectional, the cascading arms of Freya, or the deep hand-pulled channeling on Michel. These details might seem simple at first, but they’re so much more. They elevate our pieces, and they’re why designers come to us when they want a statement instead of just a sofa.

We pair that craftsmanship with intentional materials – solid alderwood frames, Pirelli webbing, premium memory foams – so that each piece is not only beautiful, but built to last. Many of our frames are designed to withstand multiple reupholsterings. In a world of fast everything, that matters to me. Creating something durable is a form of respect toward the craft, toward our planet, and toward the people who live with our furniture.

Every day, I’m inspired by what our team creates. It reminds me that what we do isn’t just manufacturing, it’s about making something meaningful. That quiet confidence you feel when you see one of our pieces? That’s the invisible work. And to me, that’s the most luxurious part.

Lean Manufacturing, Luxe Results

After many years in the upholstery business, Nathan Anthony co-founder and CEO Khai saw the need for transformative change. To deliver greater value to our clients, eliminate wasteful practices, and optimize workflows, in 2016 Khai implemented a proprietary lean manufacturing system at our Los Angeles facility, drawing inspiration from the lauded Toyota Production System.

This shift has revolutionized our upholstery approach. By minimizing waste and prioritizing efficiency, our artisans can now devote more attention to each piece. Lean efficiencies allow our team to swiftly identify and locate order components, facilitating timely adjustments. Moreover, we collaborate closely with our vendor partners to streamline the purchase, ordering, and delivery processes, ensuring a seamless experience at our warehouse.

Instead of mass-producing items that may remain unused in inventory, we build each piece to order, allowing our craftsmen to meticulously handle every detail, from precise fabric cutting to careful seam stitching. This method helps us maintain the highest standards of quality and reduce the amount of waste we produce.

Our artisans take their time to execute their craft, meticulously and with their personal touch.

Under this system, our upholstery artisans have flourished. Free from the demands of high-volume production, our artisans focus on perfecting their craft. They have the time and resources to explore innovative techniques, whether mastering complex tufting, achieving flawless fabric alignment, or experimenting with unique material combinations. Our focus on quality over quantity can be seen in our finished product. We are proud to build heirloom-quality pieces.

Our proprietary lean manufacturing approach fuels sustainable growth, allowing us to deliver exceptional value to our customers while maintaining our competitive edge in the ever-evolving furniture industry.

The first step in our production process is to understand the client’s needs. Do you have a project that would benefit from our award-winning designs and superior craftsmanship? Contact our Custom Design Concierge™ team to get started.
