The Whole Room, Considered

My feet were killing me. So, I ordered a pair of shoes from a beloved British brand with super comfy platforms. When the box arrived, I was excited, until I opened it and found the wrong size. I printed the return label, repackaged everything, drove to the post office, and waited. The replacement arrived. Same wrong size. I contacted them again. They sent another pair. Now I am managing three boxes and two return labels and still do not have shoes that fit.

Here is what that experience made me think about: when something is made for you, sized for you, built for the specific dimensions of your life, none of that happens. You open the box and it fits. That is the standard we have held at Nathan Anthony since the beginning. Every piece is made to order, to the specifications of one project, one room, one client. No guessing. No returns. No second trips to the post office.

The Anchor Piece Plus

At Nathan Anthony, we have always made the piece that anchors the room. The sofa where the conversation runs long, the sectional where everyone finds their spot, the chair that becomes someone’s favorite without anyone deciding it. That is what Nathan Anthony has always been about: not furniture, but the feeling of being exactly where you want to be. The Case Goods Capsule Collection is an extension of that same instinct. Now the books on the shelf, the objects in the cabinet, the things that hold your memory and mark your life, those live inside the same vision. The whole room, finally, from one hand.

Integrated Storage Solution

It is exciting to see designers and fans already responding to this pairing. The Miramar nightstands finished to match the Pilar bed. Shelving custom built directly into the back of a curved Relax sectional, or running the length of a Soft sectional so the sofa and the storage are one continuous piece. That kind of integration is not something you can source from two different vendors. It requires a single maker who controls both. That is what Nathan Anthony does now, and honestly, it is the most exciting thing we have built.

Built without waste

Made-to-order also means we do not create inventory that sits waiting. We manufacture precisely what is needed, when it is needed, reducing waste at every stage of production. That discipline reflects a larger commitment to sustainability that runs through everything we do at Nathan Anthony. You can read more about our process here.

Deliberate Design: Made-to-Order

Recently, I switched to a shampoo made specifically for my hair. It’s not for hair “like” mine. It’s for mine (with my name on the bottle!). What a difference! That is what a deliberate, personalized choice delivers. It is the same standard I have always held for the furniture we make at Nathan Anthony. Every piece chosen with intention, specified precisely, and built for exactly one project.

Made-to-Order Deliberate Choices

Furniture for your space deserves the same deliberate consideration as the products you choose for yourself. The Destino lounge and the Radly sectional are good examples of what that looks like in practice. On Destino, it is the wood and metal base combo, a detail that grounds the piece and gives it an architectural presence without competing with the room. On Radly, it is the sculptural ledge on the frame, a quiet distinction that separates it from every other sectional in its category.

These are not accidents. They are the result of deliberate choices made at the design stage, decisions that shape the entire space, not just occupy it. That attention is what makes a piece refined, elevated, and genuinely beautiful. When you commit to that level of intention at every stage, the result is something a client can feel the moment they walk into the room.

The European influence

Our design references draw from European interiors, where proportion, material, and silhouette are treated as a unified language. Heirloom quality is the baseline from which everything else is judged. We carry that standard into every order, every specification, every project. It is not something we arrived at. It is something we have always believed.

Made for you

Seat height, cushion fill, frame dimension, material, finish: each decision is made before we begin. Our Custom Design Concierge™ team is part of that conversation from the start. When a designer calls with an unusual floor plan or a client who needs something that does not exist in any catalog, that is exactly where we want to be. Deliberate choices, made together, produce results that last.

That is where the skilled part lives. Our artisans are not racing to hit a quota. Every seam, every welt is pressed by hand. Patterns are matched with intention. Threads are clipped, materials are steamed. Mass production demands speed. We demand fit.

Built without waste

Made-to-order also means we do not create inventory that may or may not sell. We do not stockpile materials for unused frames. We manufacture precisely what is needed, when it is needed, reducing waste across the board. Lean manufacturing reflects our larger commitment to sustainability in the home furnishings industry. Why partner in the design process? The Case for Creative Partnership More Than a Manufacturer

Over the years, we’ve often highlighted customization as a defining feature of our work. But more than anything, customization reflects our ability to respond to evolving needs, to shifts in the design process, and to the individual vision of each designer we work with.

Today, designers are asking for more than a set of standard options. They’re looking for creative collaboration. They want to shape pieces that reflect the specific needs of their clients and the distinct character of their projects. Often, this means reimagining one of our existing silhouettes: softening a squared arm, changing the pitch, adjusting the depth, or modifying stitch lines to suit a particular use or aesthetic.

These kinds of requests don’t fall outside the norm; they point to a broader shift in the industry. As designers continue to stretch creatively, the demand for flexibility, responsiveness, and shared authorship continues to grow. At Nathan Anthony, we’ve built our process around meeting that demand with care and precision.

Our ability to do that is rooted in how we work. Because we design and manufacture in Los Angeles, we’re able to move quickly, maintain quality at every step, and stay closely aligned with our clients from initial concept to final delivery. That structure allows us to say yes more often – and to deliver on that yes without compromise.

As the year winds down, I’ve been thinking about the projects that left a lasting impression. They weren’t just successful because they were beautiful, but because they were built in partnership. They involved trust, clear communication, shared problem-solving, and a mutual commitment to doing the work well.

This kind of collaboration continues to shape how we think, how we work, and how we grow. It’s the part of the process I find most fulfilling, and it’s one of the values we remain most committed to in the months ahead.

Made-to-Order, Made Exceptional

In a world where fast and easy often wins the day, we’ve chosen a different path: one rooted in craft, intention, and care. At Nathan Anthony, every upholstered piece is made-to-order, not mass produced. Here’s why that matters.

First, made-to-order allows us to tailor each piece specifically to the client’s needs. From cushion fill and seat height to stitching details and finish selections, every aspect of a piece is chosen before we begin manufacturing. This process ensures that what we create matches the designer’s vision exactly.

Custom cuts! Our seamsters measure and then measure again for accuracy and fitment.

Second, custom orders give our upholstery artisans the time and space to focus on the details. Every seam is pressed and straightened by hand. Patterns are aligned and matched with intention. Threads are clipped, materials are steamed, and tools are used to finesse the final result. When you mass-produce, speed becomes the priority. At Nathan Anthony, our aim is achieving excellence in quality construction.

Finally, made-to-order reduces waste. We don’t create inventory that may or may not sell. We don’t stockpile materials for unused frames. Instead, we manufacture precisely what’s needed, when it’s needed, reducing waste across the board. Lean manufacturing reflects our larger commitment to sustainability in the home furnishings industry, and you can learn more about our process here.

Made with Love: A Los Angeles Legacy

Nathan Anthony isn’t just a brand born in LA—it’s a family business founded on passion, precision, and the belief that furniture should be more than just beautiful. It should be crafted with care and built to last.

The Walt Disney Concert Hall, designed by Frank Gehry

Being LA-made isn’t just about location—it’s a philosophy shaped by the city’s rich culture of creativity and craftsmanship. This spirit continues to inspire how we approach manufacturing today, ensuring that every piece we create reflects the innovation and artistry that defines Los Angeles. Manufacturing locally allows us to be hands-on in every stage of production. Unlike mass-market manufacturers and furniture importers, we have more control over our costs and we don’t cut corners or compromise on quality. Instead, we empower our artisans to perfect each stitch, refine every detail, and push the boundaries of design.

In 2016, Khai took this commitment further by implementing a proprietary lean manufacturing system inspired by the Toyota Production System. This shift revolutionized our workflow—reducing waste, improving efficiency, and creating an environment where craftsmanship thrives. Every piece is made to order, ensuring the highest quality while embracing sustainability.

Being based in LA also means standing with our community in its toughest moments. Last month’s wildfires left lasting scars on landscapes we cherish. Like so many, we faced the fear of evacuation, the uncertainty of what would come next, and the heartbreaking loss of familiar places.

la can do

Yet, through adversity, our city’s resilience, creativity, and compassion shone through—values that also drive our approach to craftsmanship. We believe that great design has the power to rebuild, restore, and provide comfort, just as our community has shown strength in rebuilding after hardship. We are incredibly proud to be part of LACanDo.org, a collective of designers and manufacturers working together to furnish homes for those displaced by the fires. This initiative reaffirms what we’ve always believed: design isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about creating spaces of comfort, healing, and home.
